Emerald is the green variety of beryl, getting its colour from trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium within the beryl. Other stones in the beryl family include aquamarine and morganite.

The word emerald originated as smaradgos, the ancient Greek word for green gem. It then evolved to smaradgus (Latin), esmaralda/esmaraldus (Vulgar Latin) and finally into the Old French esmeraude.
